Creating with Love: Our Valentine’s Craft Afternoon
For our February 55+ Craft Class at the WOW Center in Merchantville, we leaned fully into Valentine’s season with a project all about love, memory, and personal expression.
This month, we created painted Valentine posters inspired by a simple but meaningful idea: tracing our hands and painting around the silhouette so it looked like hearts were floating right out of our palms. Each woman drew her own hearts by hand, which meant no two pieces were alike from the very beginning.
Everyone chose their own paper, paint colors, and style. Some followed the templated exactly while others added beautiful personal touches like names, rings, bracelets, and little details representing the people they planned to gift their artwork to. Watching each piece evolve felt less like teaching a class and more like witnessing stories unfold through paint.
The conversation naturally turned to love. Since I had recently gotten engaged, I shared my story, and in return I got to hear theirs, memories of first meetings, long marriages, laughter, challenges, and life decades ago. It was incredibly sweet and honestly very moving. There’s something special about creating with your hands while sharing stories that span generations.
By the end of the afternoon, the tables were covered in bright colors and floating hearts, and every poster felt deeply personal. What started as a simple painting activity became a space for reflection, storytelling, and connection.
These classes always remind me that crafting isn’t really about the finished project. It’s about slowing down, talking, remembering, and creating something meaningful together. We laughed, we reminisced, and everyone left with a piece of art filled with intention and love.
I’m so grateful for this community and the warmth that fills the room every time we gather at the WOW Center.
