Woven Coasters & Community

This January’s 55+ class was one of those reminders that crafting doesn’t need to be complicated to be really fun. We spent the afternoon learning how to weave yarn coasters using just a paper plate, yarn, and a needle. For almost everyone in the room, it was their very first time weaving.

We started by setting up a simple plate loom, then weaving in a circular pattern until each coaster reached the size people wanted. Once finished, we trimmed and secured the ends, and suddenly everyone had these super cute, handmade coasters they couldn’t believe they made themselves.

There was a small hiccup….turns out I forgot to write down how I originally set up the weave with an odd number of threads. So naturally, we turned it into a group puzzle. Everyone jumped in, troubleshooting together, laughing through it, and being incredibly patient and forgiving. Honestly, it just added to the charm of the class. Once we cracked it, everyone got creative with color. Mixing yarns, switching tones, and making each coaster totally their own. I also sent a few people home with extra yarn so they could try the project again. Some even planned to weave with their grandchildren, which was pretty special.

This class was easy, beginner-friendly, and full of connection. A perfect example of how creativity brings people together, even when the instructions don’t go exactly as planned. And truly we were just thankful to be back together crafting in 2026. This class has changed over the years, with new friends joining and some having life challenges making it hard to return, so I cherish every one of these crafting classes with these women. There arent too many photos since my helpers were under the weather, but its the memories that matter!
